  • In 1923, British engineer Donald Macadie combined all three into a single instrument called the AVOmeter.
  • Today's DMM is based on the same idea, but with a digital display that's easier to read and use.

One Simple Safety Rule

One of the most common mistakes is using the wrong dial setting. If the multimeter is set to current mode and connected directly across a battery, it can create a short circuit and blow the meter's internal fuse.

That's why it's always important to check the dial before taking a measurement. Engineers even joke that once the meter's "magic smoke" escapes, it stops working. It's only a joke, but it's a fun reminder to use the multimeter carefully.
